7 Exams

Download the midterm here.

Midterm exam will be a take-home one. There are two time periods for taking the exam:
  1. From 9:00 AM, Tuesday 03/08 to 9:00 AM, Wednesday 03/09.
  2. From noon, Wednesday 03/09 to noon, Thursday 03/10.
The latter slot is the default, if you want to take your exam on the first slot, you must let me know by noon on Friday 4th of March (send an email). The exam in the different slots may or may not be the same. In any case, no discussion on the exam with any other student (or anyone else) is allowed until both examination periods are over. You are of course free to consult the slides, the book, etc.

Return your exam via CSNet Turnin. I strongly recommend a pdf file (named answers.pdf), but no points will be reduced for submitting a Word-document, or a text file.

I will only create one assignment (named Midterm) in the system, with the deadline set according to the latter group. If you are in the former group, keep track of your deadline yourself.

If you have trouble with electronic submission, you can alternatively return your anwers in writing, in a closed envelope addressed to Jaakko Järvi, and also containing your name on the envelope. Bring your envelope to Leah Lewis at HRBB 301. She is at the first desk when you enter the 3rd floor offices. If for some reason Leah Lewis is not available at the time, there will be someone else around. Please ask that person to mark the time you returned your answers on the envelope, and forward it to Leah Lewis. Points will be reduced at the rate of 10% per hour for late submissions.

For the default group, the exam will be downloadable from this page. For the non-default group, I'll let you know the location via email.

7.1 Reading for the midterm

All of the slides and the book chapters 1-7. That's a lot of pages, so here's some pages that you can safely skip (the end-points of the intervals are included in the sections that can be skipped) Still quite a few remains, but the material is not all that dense. Use your own judgement on where to focus. In the exam you will have to demonstrate understanding of the language features, and design choices. Hence, at times lengthy discussions about programming in general are less important for the exam. Also, the book is rich on examples of programming with a particular set of language features. I would recommend not spending too much time on such material.
