CPSC 211 or 221: First Lab

  1. Log on your Windows account
  2. Print a helpdesk page: Unix – basic commands. See http://helpdesk.cs.tamu.edu/
  3. Use putty to connect to your Unix account
  4. Create a folder for your assignment on your Unix account
  5. Email: open your several accounts
    1. CS email account on webmail.cs.tamu.edu
    2. neo email account on neo.tamu.edu

    Add a .forward file if you do not regularly check them, see http://helpdesk.cs.tamu.edu/docs/forward_email

  6. Log in CSNet: https://csnet.cs.tamu.edu

    Change you password if you haven’t done so yet.

  7. Create a tar file following the instructions on the course page
  8. If you want, you can use Eclipse for Java or Eclipse with CDT (C/C++ Development Tooling) for C++. See the websites http://www.eclipse.org and http://www.eclipse.org/cdt.
  9. Open Eclipse:
    1. choose a workspace in your CS Unix directory.
    2. create a new project
  10. Learn how to install Eclipse on your home computer.
  11. Learn how to transfer files from your home computer to your Unix account.

  1. Log in the message board
  2. Learn about CYGWIN, see http://www.cygwin.com/
  3. Start your assignment
